When I was in graduate school, we would engage in a type of discussion we called “armchair economics.” It's a term coined by Steven Landsburg in his book The Armchair Economist. I'm barely an armchair economist but it seems we are still missing some key elements to a substantial recovery, some of which Jim Kramer discussed on TV this morning. I had to read, recently for school a fragment of Steven Landsburg's "Why I am not an environmentalist" (The Armchair Economist, chapter 24).(note 1). Steven Landsburg's book seems to be the first of the recent wave of popular “think like an economist about subjects not traditionally thought of as economics” books. I MENTIONED a while back that one of the first economics books I was assigned was Russ Roberts' "The Choice: A Fable of Free Trade and Protectionism". Like Freakonomics, The Armchair Economist applies the investigative techniques of economics to answer everyday questions. I picked this because I think people should be taught what is neat and elegant about free market economics. The Armchair Economist is fun andentertaining. I think a quoted passage may reveal why I find such books delightful.
